About

My blog focuses on the Latino Community and the issues it faces when being represented in the different forms of media–particularly in the film industry. My mission is to inform and discuss Latinos in the media/lack of and how they are portrayed, how they are paid, and how they are expected to look. I hope to educate readers on this issue and create a sense of desire for change.

This blog is aimed at readers of all ages, genders and ethnicities. I hope to attract minorities, Latinos especially, to grow an interest in my blog. I find that people of all backgrounds can find my posts to be informative, interesting and maybe even relatable.

I am of Latino descent, as both of my parents were born and raised in Mexico. I am a first generation Latina and was born and raised in Chicago. I grew up in a very diverse/multicultural city but was mostly surrounded by Latinos in school and in my community. I am in my early 20’s and consider myself to be a proud Latina that loves to discuss my culture. I am the youngest of three children and the first in my family to attend college. I come from a very “typical” Mexican household. We followed the Saturday cleaning rituals with the help of Vicente Fernandez, of course; we engaged in Sunday mass at my local Church, followed by the consumption of too many tamales; and we religiously watched telenovelas with my mom and abuela.

I was very lucky to be able to embrace my Mexican culture but also experience the American culture. I’ve always been big movie lover and enjoy the classics like Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption and even Star Wars. Since I watch too many films, it didn’t take me long to realize the lack of Latin culture/representation in the media. The Latinos I did notice in sitcoms in movies all looked the same way and played the same roles: the crazy Latina girlfriend, the non-English speaking maid, the gangbanger, or the Latin lover. It became more and more frustrating when my excitement of seeing a Latino/a in a film, was shot down due to them being given the same portrayal over and over again. This blog seeks to successfully analyze these choices and the reason behind the lack of Latinos, especially those of darker color, in the media.
